Selfies are selfportraits usually taken with a phone camera, webcam or digital camera to be posted, shared online via social medias and photo sharing services. According to the internet, the term selfie was coined in 2005 by Jim Krause in his book Photo Idea Index. Flickr had a selfie group in 2007 that was created after its administrator exchanged with Krause about his upcoming never coming book of selfie images. Some people see selfies as a symbol of vanity, others as a symbol of a generation’s lack of taste.
Curators of National #Selfie Portrait Gallery, Marina Galperina and Kyle Chayka highlight that selfportraiture as a medium allows explorations of the social self in performative ways and also, intimate as in cathartic for artists as well as nonartists. However, Kennard Philips denotes that selfie as a concept can be define more broadly with his Tony Blair taking a selfie in front of an explosion in Irak photomontage.
