Denise Weaver Ross lives and works in Albuquerque, New Mexico as an artist, designer, and poet. Her images are richly layered with cultural, political, historical and mystical references.
She is currently working on a new series based on the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching or Book of Changes, the 5000-year-old Chinese divination system. Her recently completed Legendary Creatures Series explores lesser-known legends from all over the world, and her mural "Garden of the Muses" combines primitive Greek muses, with the goddesses from "Ara Pacis" with the Egyptian mother sky and father earth.
In the House of Cards Series, Denise reimagines a deck of playing cards, using mythical and contemporary iconography to depict personal yet universal themes. The Heart Suit combines the artist’s personal story with Egyptian and Tarot motifs. Clubs become the Tree Suit, mixing myth and story from different cultures with the artist’s experience of both the natural and symbolic world of trees. Diamonds are transformed into the Star Suit, with a focus on celestial bodies and constellations. The artist has turned spades into the Bone Suit, combining fossils and human history with Day of the Dead influences.
