In 1990, Hans Defer (°1968) at the age of 21 decided he no longer wanted to be an artist.

In 2009, after an abscence of nearly 20 years he started painting again, drawing from an archive of photographs he had started assembling a year before, using sources as various as magazines, newspapers, books, internet and private snapshots.

His works don't carry a title but instead have a catalogue number from a system he himself has developed, so no interpretation is imposed upon the viewer.
Images that are linked to a context of crime and violence are presented next to more banal images, It is through the act of obsevation from the viewer that the former contaminate the latter, subconsciously turning them into potential crime scene locations.

Hans Defer lives and works in Ostend (Belgium)
