Janice Schuler

American - lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

I have been an artist my whole life. I painted murals in High School, went to Saturday afternoon art classes taught by Joseph Fitzpatrick, and I studied Art at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. At age 13 I fell in love with Van Gogh when I saw an exhibit in Pittsburgh. I didn't know who the artist was, I just stared at the paintings, the brush strokes, and color. I couldn't move. I thought to myself, ' whomever painted this, I am in love with this person.' As a young girl, his work communicated something so seductive that it changed my terms of what I wanted to do and where I fit in. Thanks Mom for taking me to the exhibit.

I taught college and raised a family. And I drew, and drew. Being a mother is creating too...knowing when to stop has been a life long challenge.

As my children grew and I retired from academia, I started painting more. Now, I spend much time painting at the 57th Street Studios. Currently I am creating 3-D pieces for my Flawless project... about drug culture. I photograph urban landscapes, and paint all sorts of things.
